Thursday night show details:

"Malakapalakadoo Skip Two" from the collection of AV Geeks: A bizarre claymation fable with kids who turn themselves into beanbags and help a troubled king with his kingdom’s problems. Is this film an attempt to teach kids about the value of using their imaginations, or is it a thinly disguised drug fable? [10 mins] more info

"Hot Dog Man: A Case Study” directed by Jim Haverkamp and Joyce Ventimiglia: One day, a statue of a giant hot dog appeared in Durham. Now all people want to do is talk about it. A comic short that proves that sometimes a hot dog is not just a hot dog. [6 mins]

"Vollis Simpson's Whirligigs " directed by Neal Hutcheson: Vollis Simpson has created more than 30 whirligigs on "Windmill Farm" in Lucama, NC, since 1985. They are colorful, whimsical, functional and some are huge -- over 50' tall! His work is loved locally as well as nationally. His work has become a part of many national collections, including The North Carolina Museum of Art, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and custom work designed for the Olympics in Atlanta. This short film seeks to capture the unmediated hypnotic appeal of the work itself. [8 mins] more info

"Memories" by Francesca Talenti: “Memories” is the third installment in a longer piece called “Dream of Liquid Memories”, a jellyfish/liquid/old footage experiment which is designed to accompany almost any soundtrack. Francesca is a an experienced filmmaker and animator. She has been teaching film studies at UNC in Chapel Hill since 2001. [10.5 mins] more info

"Metacarpus" by Nicole Triche: "Metacarpus” is an experimental documentary shot on 16mm and Super 8 film that takes a closer look at the human hand through the eyes of a classical guitarist, sleight-of-hand magician, sign language interpreter, orthopedic surgeon, henna artist, and jazz pianist. [7 mins]

"Armor of God" directed by Brett Ingram and Jim Haverkamp: Can ear-splitting improvisational noise be considered "Christian music"? North Carolina musician Scotty Irving certainly thinks so. He builds instruments out of hockey masks and crutches, bangs the ground with hammers, and in his one-man act Clang Quartet generally cranks it up for the Lord. Armor of God is a short documentary film that uses Irving's arresting performance to peer into his motivations for venturing so far out on musical and theological limbs. [12.45 mins] more info

"In the Nick (Everything is Timing)" by Jason Middleton: This film, shot on Super 8, was made to accompany music by Durham band Cantwell Gomez and Jordan. Playfully invoking an instructional film or a Sesame Street lesson, the film “teaches” the viewer how to count along with the band’s complex and hyperactive time signature shifts, and explores the ways in which sound synchronizes with image. [3:10 mins]

"Friendly Fire" by Sean Lennon, directed by Michelle Civetta: a filmSPARK + musicSPARK event
Yes, THE Sean Lennon. In a creative approach to marketing his new album, Sean Lennon has created a short film for each of the album's tracks. The film "Friendly Fire" features many of his celebrity friends. The album hits the stores September 26. We're hoping Sean decides to come to SPARK CON and register for a workshop too. C'mon Sean!
